The Consumer Protection Act 1986 is a law that was passed by the government of India to protect the interests of consumers. It was created to protect consumers from unfair practices, fraudulent activities and high-handedness of business entities.
The act has three major sections:
1) Consumer protection authority – this section deals with the formation of a Central Consumer Protection Authority which will be responsible for monitoring and enforcing the provisions of the act that govern consumer complaints. It will also help in solving consumer-related issues through dispute resolution mechanisms such as mediation and arbitration.
2) Consumer complaints redressal forum – this section provides for establishment of district/state level committees at district headquarter level, state headquarters level and sub-district headquarters level to redress any complaint made against any business entity under this act. These committees will be responsible for ensuring speedy redressal of such complaints within 45 days from the date on which they are received by them or within such other time.
